Yoga History

Yoga is a philosophy for purifying the body, mind and inner spirit. It originates in ancient India philosophy and has a history of over 5000 years. Early practitioners were knowledgeable scientists in combat with the all year round snow-capped Himalayas, learning how to live in harmony with nature. They exercised every part of the body to strengthen their physical being, regulated their breathing to control the mind, finally reaching a state of peace and enlightenment

This is how yoga philosophers of 2000 years ago described yoga:
“Yoga is controlling the ripples of the mind” (Pantanjali’s Yoga Sutras)
“Yoga is for the person who knows a middle way in eating and in resting, in expressions and in actions, in sleeping and in waking – and this yoga destroys all pain” (Bhagavad Gita)

After centuries of evolution, different branches of yoga have developed. And Hatha yoga has become the most widely practiced of all systems. Hatha yoga commonly embraces the practices of asana (poses), pranayama (breathing) and bandhas (locks).
